In the heart of the “River of Grass” they rise – small, natural elevations called hammocks.
Formed over centuries by sediment, wind, and the root systems of ancient trees.
These islands became a refuge for the Miccosukee when the modern world pushed them aside.

Here they built their chickees – wooden stilt houses with palm-leaf roofs, open to the air, protected from floods and mosquitoes.
They hunted, gathered, told stories, and observed nature until they understood it.
No electricity, no luxury – just the knowledge that every sound, every movement, every animal is part of a greater whole.

🐊 THE LAND OF ALLIGATORS

Visitors to the Everglades expect them –
but with us, you truly see them.
Dozens of alligators, some just eyes above the water, others lazily sunbathing.
They belong here. For millions of years.
And the Miccosukee live with them, not against them.

To outsiders, alligators are dangerous.
To the Miccosukee, they are spiritual guardians – beings of awareness and power.
They believe communication is possible through respect, observation, and ritual.
That between humans and alligators exists a quiet agreement:
Those who understand the water are allowed to stay.

The first reveals traces of old settlements –
weathered platforms, cypress trees rising from the ground like pillars.

The second island is alive.
Here, conservation, education, and tradition come together.
The Miccosukee teach their children how to identify medicinal plants, read animals, and preserve balance.

🐢 THE RETURN PROGRAM OF THE ALLIGATOR SNAPPING TURTLES

Alongside alligators, you may also encounter the alligator snapping turtle,
an ancient relic – angular, armored, almost prehistoric.
Once endangered,
they are now bred, monitored, and protected within the Miccosukee Reservation,
until they are strong enough to return to the wild.
